China is one of the new entrants in the space race, with ambitious plans to establish a space station by 2020 and to be the third country to put man on the Moon by 2025. The carrier rocket manned orbital on which China currently relies for its space program is the Long March family. Indeed, one of these members, the Long March 2F (or CZ-2F), was the first rocket to put a Chinese taikonaut into space. The CZ-2F is a two-stage design, and it is a development of the Long March 2E with structural modifications to allow the carriage of heavier Shenzhou capsules (its maximum payload is 8400 kg). It also has more redundant systems to improve security. Most recently, a CZ-2F rocket launched the Tiangong 1 space laboratory module (called "Heavenly Palace") into low orbit on September 29, 2011.
CZ-2F-T1 took off from the southern launch site of Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. Later, an unmanned spacecraft from Shenzhou joined Tiangong 1 twice in early November, an important step in China's goal of establishing a fully operational space station. This space laboratory will be decommissioned in 2013, to be replaced by new modules.
